Recap day 2 Belgian swimming short course championships 2024
On day 2 of the Belgian short track championships in Ghent, Roos Vanotterdijk (DMB) shakes everyone up with a Belgian record during the series 100m backstroke. She swims to a very fast chrono of 57.08, almost one second faster than 3 weeks ago!
And also during the series 100m freestyle we see Roos Vanotterdijk coming out strong with a new Belgian record. She swims a time of 53.12, doing 0.03 better than her personal record of 2 weeks ago! That promises for the finals in the evening!
The 4x50m medley mixed was on the morning programme. DMB grabs the victory. MEGA and BRABO get to join the podium as numbers two and three.
The finals of Day 2 kicked off with the men's 800m freestyle, immediately delivering a highlight of the day. Lucas Henveaux (LGN) is on course to improve his own Belgian record for a long time, but after 800m he unfortunately comes up 3 tenths short. With Logan Vanhuys (DM) and Florentin Lovens (LGN), two more swimmers dive under the 8-minute barrier.
Bas Claerhout (TZT) also manages to break the Belgian youth record in the boys 16 years old in a time of 8.02.08.
Not much later we see Roos Vanotterdijk back in action on the 100m backstroke and it looks like the morning races were just a warm-up... She pops to a time of 56.78, becoming the very first Belgian lady under 57 seconds!
In the 50m butterfly, Roos also comes very close to Kimberly Buys' Belgian record, but for now it still holds. 25.55 vs Kimberly Buys' 25.41 in 2018.
The men's 200m medley also brings us spectacle. Lucas Henveaux (LGN) proves to be of all abilities and is more than 150m under BR pace. He finishes in a very handsome time of 1.55.56. Emmanual Vanluchene's 2015 BR only just holds up against whirlwind Henveaux. Also in this race, Henvaux's clubmate Raphaël Vanhecke dives under the 2-minute mark with a time of 1.58.56. Both men obtain numbers 2 and 4 all-time in Belgian swimming at this distance short course.
Claudio Buttarelli (SCR), after breaking the BJR of the 400m medley, now also breaks the Belgian youth record in the 200m medley. He swims a time of 2.06.07.
And Roos Vanotterdijk shakes the Belgian-record tree yet again today. On the 100m freestyle, she swims a very strong race and finishes in a spectacular time of 52.78! She is the very first Belgian lady to manage to swim under 53 seconds at this distance. A day to remember for Roos!
To conclude Day 2, relays are swum. Among the men, TRUST crowned themselves Belgian champions in the 4x50m medley. They do so in 1.38.91 and miss the Belgian record for clubs by 0.05 of a second. LGN came second and MEGA third.
For the women, the 4x50m freestyle was swum. BRABO becomes Belgian champion. Team MEGA earns silver and ENLN bronze.
Day 2 is already over. On to the third and final day!
