Cancellation BC Open water 2026

Unfortunately, we have just received word from the official authorities in Bruges that the BK Open Water event cannot go ahead this weekend due to an excessive presence of ‘blue-green algae’.

Blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) pose a significant health risk, which is why water authorities and local councils immediately impose a swimming ban or cancel open water competitions upon detection.

We at the RBSF, together with the organising club BZK, find this a very unfortunate turn of events for the entire open water community.

Nature has not been kind to us this weekend, and we were so much looking forward to making the 100th edition a reality.

This weekend, the RBSF, together with BZK, will be looking into what might be possible as a ‘Plan B’ for the future, and in any case we will be discussing internally with our National Open Water Operations Committee what steps we can take to ensure that a Belgian Championship might still go ahead this season. We are not promising anything yet, but we will do our very best.
