Red Sharks U18 shine at international water polo tournament in Duisburg
Our national U18 water polo team, the Red Sharks, played a great tournament against strong opponents such as Germany, the Netherlands, Georgia and Turkey. This tournament was an important preparation for the European Junior Championships this summer in Portugal – and our boys showed that they are more than ready.
Great opener against Germany
The first match against Germany was narrowly lost 12-10. Despite the loss, our boys played strongly. Especially after a car journey of more than 300 km, this was a great performance and a good start.
Thriller against the Netherlands
The next day, the Netherlands awaited. The match ended in a spectacular 15-15 draw, after which penalties had to decide the outcome. But the Netherlands couldn't convert, so both teams were awarded one point. Robin Sergant was deservedly named player of the match.
Impressive win against Georgia
A win against Georgia was essential to remain in contention for a place in the top three. The first two periods were evenly matched, but in the third and fourth periods, the Red Sharks stepped up a gear. It ended up being a convincing 7-12 victory. Nicolin Fulgeanu was named player of the match.
Stunt against favourites Turkey
The last match was against the still undefeated Turkey. Our boys knew it would be tough, but they went for it. The match went back and forth, but our goalkeeper Mathis Malin was in top form and kept his team in the game with some great saves. The Turks became frustrated and started to play harder and less sportsmanlike. Nevertheless, Belgium held on and won 10-13. Mathis was not only named player of the match, but also best goalkeeper of the tournament – what an achievement!
At the end of this month, the team will go on a training camp in Lithuania before leaving for Rio Major on 16 August for the EJK Division I.
